Seeds for 2/21/2023 - Colossians 2:9-10
Scripture: “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.”
Observation: So far in this chapter, Paul is all about the Colossians knowing “the mystery of God, namely, Christ.” He is delighted to see their firm faith in Christ, determined to see them continue to live their lives in Christ, and desiring that they stay alert to belief systems that depend on the world instead of Christ. Christ is the center of everything for Paul, and He should be for us as well.
Here’s another reason why. As Paul eloquently stated (a) the mystery of the Incarnation and, (b) the significance of the cross and resurrection in chapter 1, he continues to ground everything he teaches in these core truths. Paul hammers home that “all the fullness of the Deity lives” in Christ—Jesus of Nazareth. Not partially, not 50/50. All the fullness. Jesus was not an inspiring man or prophet. He was God. “All the fullness of the Deity”!
That’s a stunning enough phrase. But I can’t help noticing an echo in the second half of that sentence: “and in Christ you have been brought to fullness” in Him.
This is yet another way of stating, and marveling at, the significance of Jesus Christ. All the fullness of God lives in Him. And in Him we have been brought to fullness. If we want to know all the fullness of God, look to Him. Nothing is held back. And if we want to experience what it means to be fully human and fully alive, we go to Him as well.
Jesus is the pivot point of history. He’s also the pivot point of Divinity and humanity. If we want to know God fully, know Christ. If we want to know ourselves fully, likewise, know Christ. He’s the center of it all.
Application: How does Christ bring us into all the fullness of who we are made to be? What can/do you do to keep Christ at the center of your life daily?
Prayer: Lord, center me on Christ, that I may know your fullness and become fully who you’ve made me to be. Amen.
“But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” (Matthew 13:23)
