Welcome to the Bible in a Year for 2025. Intro to this series and resource links available here, plus here’s how I’m approaching this year.
Scriptures for Today:
Reflection:
Today we encounter iconic images of the Passover and the parting of the Red Sea. Here are a few observations on these chapter.
Image for Christian salvation in Passover (12:13) - The Israelites are saved when they gather as a family in a house that is covered by the blood of the lamb. Christians are a community of those being saved by being made a member of the family of God and covered by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ. The Exodus story’s parallels with the theological imagery in the New Testament is striking.
Guided by God’s Presence (13:21-22) - God has given promises and instructions galore. But here we see that God does not only provide a set of commands, He gives them His personal presence in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
Quick to cave (14:10-12) - When the Israelites saw the Egyptians rallied and were pursuing them, they bailed on God! The way they speak to Moses is embarrassing, saying they would have preferred slavery to freedom. “Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” Not resilient in the face of resistance!
Questions:
How does this comparison help you connect the imagery of Passover and Christian salvation?
When have you experienced God’s personal guidance? How did that look?
What else might the Holy Spirit be speaking with you about in the text today?
Prayer: Lord, guide me along the right paths for your name’s sake. Amen.
“But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” (Matthew 13:23)
